Why you shouldn't mix brow dye with a brush:

Mixing dye and developer with a tint/dye brush might seem like a harmless shortcut to save time and effort, but the repercussions on the longevity of your brushes can be substantial.

Let me tell you a story…

As a budding brow artist, my journey took an unexpected turn when my boss caught me using a Bella Brush to mix dye and developer. 😨

My boss, a seasoned brow artist with years of experience, took one look at my innocent attempt to mix dye with an application brush and her eyes widened in horror. The studio fell silent, and I could almost hear the gasps from the surrounding workstations. I couldn't fathom what I had done wrong, but her reaction spoke volumes.

That

In a hushed yet stern tone, she approached me and explained the grave mistake I had made. Mixing dye and developer with a brush, was a cardinal sin in the world of brow artistry. It wasn't just about preserving the pristine appearance of the brushes; it was about maintaining the integrity of our craft.

Why is this important?

As she pointed out, when mixing the harsh chemicals present in the dye and developer had a corrosive effect on the bristles of the brush. This led to the brush becoming easily frayed. A frayed brush, she emphasised, would compromise the precision and sharpness needed to create those flawless, crisp lines that we are known for.

In the competitive world of beauty, using a frayed brush was simply unacceptable. A frayed brush could lead to uneven application, blurred lines, and general degradation of the quality of our work. My boss made it clear that the longevity of our tools directly impacted the longevity of our careers (a tad dramatic if you ask me, but I digress).

The revelation sank in, and I quickly understood the gravity of my mistake. She went on to teach me the proper technique for mixing dye and developer without subjecting the brushes to unnecessary wear and tear. It involved using a mixing dish and a spatula or tint stick – a method that not only preserved the brushes but also ensured a more accurate and consistent blend.

From that day forward, I became an advocate for treating our tools with the respect they deserved. I shared my experience with fellow brow artists, urging them to abandon the brush-mixing habit. The collective goal was clear – to create impeccable brows while extending the life of our cherished (and sometimes expensive) tools.

FAQs

How Do I Clean My Dye Brushes?

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES

  1. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water.
  2. Place a drop of cleanser into the palm of your clean hand.
  3. Gently massage the tips of the bristles in your palm.
  4. Rinse the bristles thoroughly.
  5. Squeeze out the excess moisture with a clean towel.
  6. Re-form the brush head back into its original shape.
  7. Let the brush dry with its bristles hanging off the edge of the edge of counter which allows it to dry in the correct shape.

How Often Should I Clean My Brushes?

Regularly cleaning your brow brushes is vital not only for maintaining hygiene but also for maximising the effectiveness of your brushes. Unclean brushes can accumulate tint residue and bacteria, potentially leading to skin irritation or an uneven tint application. Regular cleaning is essential to prolong the life and maintain the quality of your brushes, preventing stiff or clumped bristles that could otherwise compromise the precision of tinting. Whether you're a professional brow artist or an enthusiast, maintaining clean brushes is essential for achieving professional-looking results, preserving the longevity of your tools, and ensuring the overall effectiveness of brow tinting.

Should I Let My Brushes Soak?

Refrain from allowing your brushes to soak overnight or for an extended duration, and avoid letting them dry on a towel to prevent the bristles from developing mildew.
